Mattarello Cooking Lab
Savor the taste of fresh handmade pasta and desserts with authentic and traditional recipes brought straight from the South of Italy. Chef owner Lucia Celi mastered the art of pasta making from her Nona (Grandmother) and moved to San Diego after years of operating eateries across Milan. With husband, Francesco Guardini, they created this quaint and beautiful eatery right on Sixth Avenue. At Mattarello, each dish is made from scratch with the freshest, locally-sourced organic ingredients.
P.S. you too can learn the magic of Nona and discover the art of cooking in the cooking lab! Be sure to follow them for more details.
Cocina Calavera
Have you ever heard of a completely gluten, diary and sugar free Mexican restaurant? Impressive, we know!
Meet Joshua Evans, the mastermind behind Hillcrest’s newest health-driven Latin restaurant. Cocina Calavera has it all, from enchiladas, tacos, burritos and fajitas, all of which come in a vegan option made with jackfruit or portobello mushroom.
If that wasn’t enough, their bar selection is unlike any other, including a curated selection of drafts, ciders, hard kombuchas and even organic cold pressed craft cocktails that will have you coming back for more.
Fun fact: Josh moved to Tijuana for nearly three years to immerse himself in all of the flavors of authentic Mexican food to perfect his menu. That’s what we call passion!
Hi Poke
This fast casual poke restaurant has you covered with the highest quality raw fish and freshest ingredients. Sushi chef, Scotty Brennan, is serving up this taste of Hawaii with locations in the Headquarters in downtown San Diego next to Seaport Village and on G Street in East Village.
Be sure to check them out and experience their homemade sauces on your favorite poke bowl.
As added bonus, Hi Poke also serves fully cooked warm bowls such as chicken, eel, scallops and even baked tofu!
Huapangos
While there’s no shortage of Mexican cuisine here in San Diego, Huapangos serves authentic family meals influenced from all over the region. Teamed by husband and wife, Viri and JT, this local favorite has been serving the Hillcrest community since 2009. The couple drew inspiration from Viri’s mother’s cooking while growing up in the Yucatan Peninsula.
Their unique and cozy hacienda style atmosphere, from the beautiful mosaic tiles to the hand painted stones put into place by JT himself, offers an experience you won’t want to miss.
Gaslamp Fish House
If you enjoy great seafood and steak, then you’ve come to the right place.
Gaslamp Fish House offers some of the very best in American and Mediterranean cuisine right in the heart of Downtown. Don’t believe us? They were awarded the “Taste of Gaslamp 2018” by the Gaslamp Quarter Association!
They pride themselves on the highest-quality seafood, which is sourced locally and responsibly from sustainable and environmentally conscious fisheries. Guests love their pan sauted diver scallops, lobster bisque and dynamite wild seabass, and we’re sure that you will too.
